NomatterhowmuchAuntPetuniawailedthatDudleywasbig-boned,andthathispoundagewasreallypuppyfat,andthathewasagrowingboywhoneededplentyoffood,thefactremainedthattheschooloutfittersdidn’tstockknickerbockersbigenoughforhimanymore.TheschoolnursehadseenwhatAuntPetunia’seyes-sosharpwhenitcametospottingfingerprintsonhergleamingwalls,andinobservingthecomingsandgoingsoftheneighbors-simplyrefusedtosee:thatfarfromneedingextranourishment,Dudleyhadreachedroughlythesizeandweightofayoungkillerwhale.
So-aftermanytantrums,afterargumentsthatshookHarry’sbedroomfloor,andmanytearsfromAuntPetunia-thenewregimehadbegun.ThedietsheetthathadbeensentbytheSmeltingsschoolnursehadbeentapedtothefridge,whichhadbeenemptiedofallDudley’sfavoritethings-fizzydrinksandcakes,chocolatebarsandburgersandfilledinsteadwithfruitandvegetablesandthesortsofthingsthatUncleVernoncalled"rabbitfood."TomakeDudleyfeelbetteraboutitall,AuntPetuniahadinsistedthatthewholefamilyfollowthediettoo.ShenowpassedagrapefruitquartertoHarry.HenoticedthatitwasalotsmallerthanDudley’s.AuntPetuniaseemedtofeetthatthebestwaytokeepupDudley’smoralewastomakesurethathedid,atleast,getmoretoeatthanHarry.
ButAuntPetuniadidn’tknowwhatwashiddenundertheloosefloorboardupstairs.ShehadnoideathatHarrywasnotfollowingthedietatall.
