ThefourlongHousetableswerepackedwithchatteringstudents;atthetopoftheHall,thestaffsatalongonesideofafifthtable,facingtheirpupils.Itwasmuchwarmerinhere.Harry,Ron,andHermionewalkedpasttheSlytherins,theRavenclaws,andtheHufflepuffs,andsatdownwiththerestoftheGryffindorsatthefarsideoftheHall,nexttoNearlyHeadlessNick,theGryffindorghost.Pearlywhiteandsemitransparent,Nickwasdressedtonightinhisusualdoublet,butwithaparticularlylargeruff,whichservedthedualpurposeoflookingextra-festive,andinsuringthathisheaddidn’twobbletoomuchonhispartiallyseveredneck.
"Goodevening,"hesaid,beamingatthem.
"Sayswho?"saidHarry,takingoffhissneakersandemptyingthemofwater."HopetheyhurryupwiththeSorting.I’mstarving."
TheSortingofthenewstudentsintoHousestookplaceatthestartofeveryschoolyear,butbyanunluckycombinationofcircumstances,Harryhadn’tbeenpresentatonesincehisown.Hewasquitelookingforwardtoit.Justthen,ahighlyexcited,breathlessvoicecalleddownthetable.

"Er-good,"saidHarry.
