           AtfirstsheheardonlyMétivier’svoice,thenherfather’s,thenbothvoicesbeganspeakingatthesametime,thedoorwasflungopen,andonthethresholdappearedthehandsomefigureoftheterrifiedMétivierwithhisshockofblackhair,andtheprinceinhisdressinggownandfez,hisfacedistortedwithfuryandthepupilsofhiseyesrolleddownwards.

           “Youdon’tunderstand?”shoutedtheprince,“butIdo!Frenchspy,slaveofBuonaparte,spy,getoutofmyhouse!Beoff,Itellyou...”andheslammedthedoor.

           Métivier,shrugginghisshoulders,wentuptoMademoiselleBouriennewhoatthesoundofshoutinghadruninfromanadjoiningroom.

           “Theprinceisnotverywell:bileandrushofbloodtothehead.Keepcalm,Iwillcallagaintomorrow,”saidMétivier;andputtinghisfingerstohislipshehastenedaway.

           Throughthestudydoorcamethesoundofslipperedfeetandthecry:“Spies,traitors,traitorseverywhere!Notamoment’speaceinmyownhouse!”

           AfterMétivier’sdeparturetheoldprincecalledhisdaughterin,andthewholeweightofhiswrathfellonher.Shewastoblamethataspyhadbeenadmitted.Hadhenottoldher,yes,toldhertomakealist,andnottoadmitanyonewhowasnotonthatlist?Thenwhywasthatscoundreladmitted?Shewasthecauseofitall.Withher,hesaid,hecouldnothaveamoment’speaceandcouldnotdiequietly.

           “No,ma’am!Wemustpart,wemustpart!Understandthat,understandit!Icannotendureanymore,”hesaid,andlefttheroom.
