           Berg,theRostóvs’son-in-law,wasalreadyacolonelwearingtheordersofVladímirandAnna,andhestillfilledthequietandagreeablepostofassistanttotheheadofthestaffoftheassistantcommanderofthefirstdivisionoftheSecondArmy.

           OnthefirstofSeptemberhehadcometoMoscowfromthearmy.

           HehadnothingtodoinMoscow,buthehadnoticedthateveryoneinthearmywasaskingforleavetovisitMoscowandhadsomethingtodothere.Soheconsidereditnecessarytoaskforleaveofabsenceforfamilyanddomesticreasons.

           Bergdroveuptohisfather-in-law’shouseinhissprucelittletrapwithapairofsleekroans,exactlylikethoseofacertainprince.Helookedattentivelyatthecartsintheyardandwhilegoinguptotheporchtookoutacleanpockethandkerchiefandtiedaknotinit.

           FromtheanteroomBergranwithsmooththoughimpatientstepsintothedrawingroom,whereheembracedthecount,kissedthehandsofNatáshaandSónya,andhastenedtoinquireafter“Mamma’s”health.

           “Health,atatimelikethis?”saidthecount.“Come,tellusthenews!Isthearmyretreatingorwilltherebeanotherbattle?”

           “GodAlmightyalonecandecidethefateofourfatherland,Papa,”saidBerg.“Thearmyisburningwithaspiritofheroismandtheleaders,sotosay,havenowassembledincouncil.Nooneknowswhatiscoming.
