           TherewasnownooneinthereceptionroomexceptPrinceVasíliandtheeldestprincess,whoweresittingundertheportraitofCatherinetheGreatandtalkingeagerly.AssoonastheysawPierreandhiscompaniontheybecamesilent,andPierrethoughthesawtheprincesshidesomethingasshewhispered:

           “Ican’tbearthesightofthatwoman.”

           “Catichehashadteaservedinthesmalldrawingroom,”saidPrinceVasílitoAnnaMikháylovna.“Goandtakesomething,mypoorAnnaMikháylovna,oryouwillnotholdout.”
