           ItwasinJuly,1805,andthespeakerwasthewell-knownAnnaPávlovnaSchérer,maidofhonorandfavoriteoftheEmpressMáryaFëdorovna.WiththesewordsshegreetedPrinceVasíliKurágin,amanofhighrankandimportance,whowasthefirsttoarriveatherreception.AnnaPávlovnahadhadacoughforsomedays.Shewas,asshesaid,sufferingfromlagrippe;grippebeingthenanewwordinSt.Petersburg,usedonlybytheelite.

           Allherinvitationswithoutexception,writteninFrench,anddeliveredbyascarlet-liveriedfootmanthatmorning,ranasfollows:
