           Bendingforwardinhisarmchairhesaid:“LeRoidePrusse!”andhavingsaidthislaughed.Everyoneturnedtowardhim.

           “LeRoidePrusse?”Hippolytesaidinterrogatively,againlaughing,andthencalmlyandseriouslysatbackinhischair.AnnaPávlovnawaitedforhimtogoon,butasheseemedquitedecidedtosaynomoreshebegantotellofhowatPotsdamtheimpiousBonapartehadstolentheswordofFredericktheGreat.

           “ItistheswordofFredericktheGreatwhichI...”shebegan,butHippolyteinterruptedherwiththewords:“LeRoidePrusse...”andagain,assoonasallturnedtowardhim,excusedhimselfandsaidnomore.

           AnnaPávlovnafrowned.Mortemart,Hippolyte’sfriend,addressedhimfirmly.

           Hippolytelaughedasifashamedoflaughing.

           Boríssmiledcircumspectly,sothatitmightbetakenasironicalorappreciativeaccordingtothewaythejokewasreceived.Everybodylaughed.
