Chapter 13

           

           TheFrenchevacuationbeganonthenightbetweenthesixthandseventhofOctober:kitchensandshedsweredismantled,cartsloaded,andtroopsandbaggagetrainsstarted.

           AtseveninthemorningaFrenchconvoyinmarchingtrim,wearingshakosandcarryingmuskets,knapsacks,andenormoussacks,stoodinfrontofthesheds,andanimatedFrenchtalkmingledwithcursessoundedallalongthelines.

           Intheshedeveryonewasready,dressed,belted,shod,andonlyawaitedtheordertostart.Thesicksoldier,Sokolóv,paleandthinwithdarkshadowsroundhiseyes,alonesatinhisplacebarefootandnotdressed.Hiseyes,prominentfromtheemaciationofhisface,gazedinquiringlyathiscomradeswhowerepayingnoattentiontohim,andhemoanedregularlyandquietly.Itwasevidentlynotsomuchhissufferingsthatcausedhimtomoan(hehaddysentery)ashisfearandgriefatbeingleftalone.

           “I’llgoandaskthemagaindirectly,”saidPierre,risingandgoingtothedooroftheshed.

           JustasPierrereachedthedoor,thecorporalwhohadofferedhimapipethedaybeforecameuptoitwithtwosoldiers.
