           ThreeweeksafterthelasteveninghehadspentwiththeRostóvs,PrinceAndrewreturnedtoPetersburg.

           NextdayafterhertalkwithhermotherNatáshaexpectedBolkónskiallday,buthedidnotcome.Onthesecondandthirddayitwasthesame.PierredidnotcomeeitherandNatásha,notknowingthatPrinceAndrewhadgonetoseehisfather,couldnotexplainhisabsencetoherself.

           Threeweekspassedinthisway.Natáshahadnodesiretogooutanywhereandwanderedfromroomtoroomlikeashadow,idleandlistless;sheweptsecretlyatnightanddidnotgotohermotherintheevenings.Sheblushedcontinuallyandwasirritable.Itseemedtoherthateverybodyknewaboutherdisappointmentandwaslaughingatherandpityingher.Strongaswasherinwardgrief,thiswoundtohervanityintensifiedhermisery.

           Onceshecametohermother,triedtosaysomething,andsuddenlybegantocry.Hertearswerethoseofanoffendedchildwhodoesnotknowwhyitisbeingpunished.

           “Leaveoff,Mamma!Idon’tthink,anddon’twanttothinkaboutit!Hejustcameandthenleftoff,leftoff....”

           Hervoicetrembled,andsheagainnearlycried,butrecoveredandwentonquietly:

           “AndIdon’tatallwanttogetmarried.AndIamafraidofhim;Ihavenowbecomequitecalm,quitecalm.
