           “Well,goon,goon.Iamveryglad,”saidPierre,andhisfacereallychanged,hisbrowbecamesmooth,andhelistenedgladlytoPrinceAndrew.PrinceAndrewseemed,andreallywas,quiteadifferent,quiteanewman.Wherewashisspleen,hiscontemptforlife,hisdisillusionment?Pierrewastheonlypersontowhomhemadeuphismindtospeakopenly;andtohimhetoldallthatwasinhissoul.Nowheboldlyandlightlymadeplansforanextendedfuture,saidhecouldnotsacrificehisownhappinesstohisfather’scaprice,andspokeofhowhewouldeithermakehisfatherconsenttothismarriageandloveher,orwoulddowithouthisconsent;thenhemarveledatthefeelingthathadmasteredhimasatsomethingstrange,apartfromandindependentofhimself.

           “IshouldnothavebelievedanyonewhotoldmethatIwascapableofsuchlove,”saidPrinceAndrew.“ItisnotatallthesamefeelingthatIknewinthepast.Thewholeworldisnowformedividedintotwohalves:onehalfisshe,andthereallisjoy,hope,light:theotherhalfiseverythingwheresheisnot,andthereisallgloomanddarkness....”

           “Darknessandgloom,”reiteratedPierre:“yes,yes,Iunderstandthat.”

           “Icannothelplovingthelight,itisnotmyfault.AndIamveryhappy!Youunderstandme?Iknowyouaregladformysake.”

           “Yes,yes,”Pierreassented,lookingathisfriendwithatouchedandsadexpressioninhiseyes.ThebrighterPrinceAndrew’slotappearedtohim,thegloomierseemedhisown.
