           DuringtheirlongconversationonWednesdayevening,Speránskimorethanonceremarked:“Weregardeverythingthatisabovethecommonlevelofrootedcustom...”or,withasmile:“Butwewantthewolvestobefedandthesheeptobesafe...”or:“Theycannotunderstandthis...”andallinawaythatseemedtosay:“We,youandI,understandwhattheyareandwhoweare.”

           ThisfirstlongconversationwithSperánskionlystrengthenedinPrinceAndrewthefeelinghehadexperiencedtowardhimattheirfirstmeeting.Hesawinhimaremarkable,clear-thinkingmanofvastintellectwhobyhisenergyandpersistencehadattainedpower,whichhewasusingsolelyforthewelfareofRussia.
