           Everygeneralandeverysoldierwasconsciousofhisowninsignificance,awareofbeingbutadropinthatoceanofmen,andyetatthesametimewasconsciousofhisstrengthasapartofthatenormouswhole.

           Fromearlymorningstrenuousactivitiesandeffortshadbegunandbyteno’clockallhadbeenbroughtintodueorder.Theranksweredrawnuponthevastfield.Thewholearmywasextendedinthreelines:thecavalryinfront,behindittheartillery,andbehindthatagaintheinfantry.

           Aspacelikeastreetwasleftbetweeneachtwolinesoftroops.Thethreepartsofthatarmyweresharplydistinguished:Kutúzov’sfightingarmy(withthePávlogradsontherightflankofthefront);thoserecentlyarrivedfromRussia,bothGuardsandregimentsoftheline;andtheAustriantroops.Buttheyallstoodinthesamelines,underonecommand,andinalikeorder.

           Likewindoverleavesrananexcitedwhisper:“They’recoming!They’recoming!”Alarmedvoiceswereheard,andastiroffinalpreparationsweptoverallthetroops.

           FromthedirectionofOlmützinfrontofthem,agroupwasseenapproaching.Andatthatmoment,thoughthedaywasstill,alightgustofwindblowingoverthearmyslightlystirredthestreamersonthelancesandtheunfoldedstandardsflutteredagainsttheirstaffs.ItlookedasifbythatslightmotionthearmyitselfwasexpressingitsjoyattheapproachoftheEmperors.Onevoicewasheardshouting:“Eyesfront!”Then,likethecrowingofcocksatsunrise,thiswasrepeatedbyothersfromvarioussidesandallbecamesilent.
