           Thetwocommandersweremuchexasperatedwithoneanotherand,longaftertheactionhadbegunontherightflankandtheFrenchwerealreadyadvancing,wereengagedindiscussionwiththesoleobjectofoffendingoneanother.Buttheregiments,bothcavalryandinfantry,werebynomeansreadyfortheimpendingaction.Fromprivatestogeneraltheywerenotexpectingabattleandwereengagedinpeacefuloccupations,thecavalryfeedingthehorsesandtheinfantrycollectingwood.

           “HehigherissdanIinrank,”saidtheGermancolonelofthehussars,flushingandaddressinganadjutantwhohadriddenup,“solethimdowhathevill,butIcannotsacrificemyhussars...Bugler,sountzeretreat!”
