           Somewereusingtheirramrods,othersputtingpowderonthetouchpansortakingchargesfromtheirpouches,whileotherswerefiring,thoughwhotheywerefiringatcouldnotbeseenforthesmokewhichtherewasnowindtocarryaway.Apleasanthummingandwhistlingofbulletswereoftenheard.“Whatisthis?”thoughtPrinceAndrewapproachingthecrowdofsoldiers.“Itcan’tbeanattack,fortheyarenotmoving;itcan’tbeasquare—fortheyarenotdrawnupforthat.”

           Thecommanderoftheregiment,athin,feeble-lookingoldmanwithapleasantsmile—hiseyelidsdroopingmorethanhalfoverhisoldeyes,givinghimamildexpression,rodeuptoBagratiónandwelcomedhimasahostwelcomesanhonoredguest.HereportedthathisregimenthadbeenattackedbyFrenchcavalryandthat,thoughtheattackhadbeenrepulsed,hehadlostmorethanhalfhismen.Hesaidtheattackhadbeenrepulsed,employingthismilitarytermtodescribewhathadoccurredtohisregiment,butinrealityhedidnothimselfknowwhathadhappenedduringthathalf-hourtothetroopsentrustedtohim,andcouldnotsaywithcertaintywhethertheattackhadbeenrepulsedorhisregimenthadbeenbrokenup.Allheknewwasthatatthecommencementoftheactionballsandshellsbeganflyingalloverhisregimentandhittingmenandthatafterwardssomeonehadshouted“Cavalry!”andourmenhadbegunfiring.Theywerestillfiring,notatthecavalrywhichhaddisappeared,butatFrenchinfantrywhohadcomeintothehollowandwerefiringatourmen.
