           Ashewasleavingthebattery,firingwasheardontheleftalso,andasitwastoofartotheleftflankforhimtohavetimetogotherehimself,PrinceBagratiónsentZherkóvtotellthegeneralincommand(theonewhohadparadedhisregimentbeforeKutúzovatBraunau)thathemustretreatasquicklyaspossiblebehindthehollowintherear,astherightflankwouldprobablynotbeabletowithstandtheenemy’sattackverylong.AboutTúshinandthebattalionthathadbeeninsupportofhisbatteryallwasforgotten.PrinceAndrewlistenedattentivelytoBagratión’scolloquieswiththecommandingofficersandtheordershegavethemand,tohissurprise,foundthatnoorderswerereallygiven,butthatPrinceBagratióntriedtomakeitappearthateverythingdonebynecessity,byaccident,orbythewillofsubordinatecommanderswasdone,ifnotbyhisdirectcommand,atleastinaccordwithhisintentions.PrinceAndrewnoticed,however,thatthoughwhathappenedwasduetochanceandwasindependentofthecommander’swill,owingtothetactBagratiónshowed,hispresencewasveryvaluable.Officerswhoapproachedhimwithdisturbedcountenancesbecamecalm;soldiersandofficersgreetedhimgaily,grewmorecheerfulinhispresence,andwereevidentlyanxioustodisplaytheircouragebeforehim.
