           “Oh,I’llgoandsee,”saidPierre,jumpingup.“Youknow,”headded,stoppingatthedoor,“whyI’mespeciallyfondofthatmusic?Itisalwaysthefirstthingthattellsmealliswell.WhenIwasdrivingheretoday,thenearerIgottothehousethemoreanxiousIgrew.AsIenteredtheanteroomIheardAndrúsha’spealsoflaughterandthatmeantthatallwaswell.”

           “Iknow!Iknowthatfeeling,”saidNicholas.“ButImustn’tgothere—thosestockingsaretobeasurpriseforme.”

           Pierrewenttothechildren,andtheshoutingandlaughtergrewstilllouder.

           “Come,AnnaMakárovna,”Pierre’svoicewasheardsaying,“comehereintothemiddleoftheroomandatthewordofcommand,‘One,two,’andwhenIsay‘three’...Youstandhere,andyouinmyarms—wellnow!One,two!...”saidPierre,andasilencefollowed:“three!”andarapturouslybreathlesscryofchildren’svoicesfilledtheroom.“Two,two!”theyshouted.

           Thismeanttwostockings,whichbyasecretprocessknownonlytoherselfAnnaMakárovnausedtoknitatthesametimeonthesameneedles,andwhich,whentheywereready,shealwaystriumphantlydrew,oneoutoftheother,inthechildren’spresence.
