           AfterspeakingtotheseniorFrenchofficer,whocameoutofthehousewithawhitehandkerchieftiedtohisswordandannouncedthattheysurrendered,DólokhovdismountedandwentuptoPétya,wholaymotionlesswithoutstretchedarms.

           “Donefor!”hesaidwithafrown,andwenttothegatetomeetDenísovwhowasridingtowardhim.

           “Killed?”criedDenísov,recognizingfromadistancetheunmistakablylifelessattitude—veryfamiliartohim—inwhichPétya’sbodywaslying.

           “Donefor!”repeatedDólokhovasiftheutteranceofthesewordsaffordedhimpleasure,andhewentquicklyuptotheprisoners,whoweresurroundedbyCossackswhohadhurriedup.“Wewon’ttakethem!”hecalledouttoDenísov.

           Denísovdidnotreply;herodeuptoPétya,dismounted,andwithtremblinghandsturnedtowardhimselfthebloodstained,mud-bespatteredfacewhichhadalreadygonewhite.
