           ItwasnecessarytolettheFrenchreachShámshevoquietlywithoutalarmingthemandthen,afterjoiningDólokhovwhowastocomethateveningtoaconsultationatawatchman’shutintheforestlessthanamilefromShámshevo,tosurprisetheFrenchatdawn,fallinglikeanavalancheontheirheadsfromtwosides,androutandcapturethemallatoneblow.

           Denísovconsidereditdangeroustomakeasecondattackforfearofputtingthewholecolumnonthealert,sohesentTíkhonShcherbáty,apeasantofhisparty,toShámshevototryandseizeatleastoneoftheFrenchquartermasterswhohadbeensentoninadvance.
