           Intherefreshmentroomandthehall,footmenwerebustlingaboutwithwineandviands.Groupsofsingersstoodoutsidethewindows.Theofficerwasadmittedandimmediatelysawallthechiefgeneralsofthearmytogether,andamongthemErmólov’sbigimposingfigure.Theyallhadtheircoatsunbuttonedandwerestandinginasemicirclewithflushedandanimatedfaces,laughingloudly.Inthemiddleoftheroomashorthandsomegeneralwitharedfacewasdancingthetrepákwithmuchspiritandagility.

           “Ha,ha,ha!Bravo,NicholasIványch!Ha,ha,ha!”

           Theofficerfeltthatbyarrivingwithimportantordersatsuchamomenthewasdoublytoblame,andhewouldhavepreferredtowait;butoneofthegeneralsespiedhimand,hearingwhathehadcomeabout,informedErmólov.

           Ermólovcameforwardwithafrownonhisfaceand,hearingwhattheofficerhadtosay,tookthepapersfromhimwithoutaword.

           “Youthinkhewentoffjustbychance?”saidacomrade,whowasonthestaffthatevening,totheofficeroftheHorseGuards,referringtoErmólov.“Itwasatrick.ItwasdoneonpurposetogetKonovnítsynintotrouble.You’llseewhatamessthere’llbetomorrow.”
