           Malvíntsevaexpressedapproval,andthegovernor’swifebegantospeakofRostóvinMary’spresence,praisinghimandtellinghowhehadblushedwhenPrincessMary’snamewasmentioned.ButPrincessMaryexperiencedapainfulratherthanajoyfulfeeling—hermentaltranquillitywasdestroyed,anddesires,doubts,self-reproach,andhopesreawoke.

           DuringthetwodaysthatelapsedbeforeRostóvcalled,PrincessMarycontinuallythoughtofhowsheoughttobehavetohim.Firstshedecidednottocometothedrawingroomwhenhecalledtoseeheraunt—thatitwouldnotbeproperforher,inherdeepmourning,toreceivevisitors;thenshethoughtthiswouldberudeafterwhathehaddoneforher;thenitoccurredtoherthatherauntandthegovernor’swifehadintentionsconcerningherselfandRostóv—theirlooksandwordsattimesseemedtoconfirmthissupposition—thenshetoldherselfthatonlyshe,withhersinfulnature,couldthinkthisofthem:theycouldnotforgetthatsituatedasshewas,whilestillwearingdeepmourning,suchmatchmakingwouldbeaninsulttoherandtoherfather’smemory.Assumingthatshedidgodowntoseehim,PrincessMaryimaginedthewordshewouldsaytoherandwhatshewouldsaytohim,andthesewordssometimesseemedundeservedlycoldandthentomeantoomuch.Morethananythingshefearedlesttheconfusionshefeltmightoverwhelmherandbetrayherassoonasshesawhim.
