Chapter 27

           ToaproposalmadebyGeneralCampan(whowastoattacktheflèches)toleadhisdivisionthroughthewoods,Napoleonagreed,thoughtheso-calledDukeofElchingen(Ney)venturedtoremarkthatamovementthroughthewoodswasdangerousandmightdisorderthedivision.

           HavinginspectedthecountryoppositetheShevárdinoRedoubt,NapoleonponderedalittleinsilenceandthenindicatedthespotswheretwobatteriesshouldbesetupbythemorrowtoactagainsttheRussianentrenchments,andtheplaceswhere,inlinewiththem,thefieldartilleryshouldbeplaced.

           Aftergivingtheseandothercommandshereturnedtohistent,andthedispositionsforthebattlewerewrittendownfromhisdictation.

           Thesedispositions,ofwhichtheFrenchhistorianswritewithenthusiasmandotherhistorianswithprofoundrespect,wereasfollows:

           AtdawnthetwonewbatteriesestablishedduringthenightontheplainoccupiedbythePrinced’Eckmühlwillopenfireontheopposingbatteriesoftheenemy.

           Atthesametimethecommanderoftheartilleryofthe1stCorps,GeneralPernetti,withthirtycannonofCampan’sdivisionandallthehowitzersofDessaix’sandFriant’sdivisions,willmoveforward,openfire,andoverwhelmwithshellfiretheenemy’sbattery,againstwhichwilloperate:

           24gunsoftheartilleryoftheGuards

           30gunsofCampan’sdivision

           and8gunsofFriant’sandDessaix’sdivisions

           

           inall62guns.
