           Hetouchedhishorse,gavethewordofcommand,andimmediately,hearingbehindhimthetrampofthehorsesofhisdeployedsquadron,rodeatfulltrotdownhilltowardthedragoons.Hardlyhadtheyreachedthebottomofthehillbeforetheirpaceinstinctivelychangedtoagallop,whichgrewfasterandfasterastheydrewnearertoourUhlansandtheFrenchdragoonswhogallopedafterthem.Thedragoonswerenowcloseathand.Onseeingthehussars,theforemostbegantoturn,whilethosebehindbegantohalt.Withthesamefeelingwithwhichhehadgallopedacrossthepathofawolf,RostóvgavereintohisDonétshorseandgallopedtointersectthepathofthedragoons’disorderedlines.OneUhlanstopped,anotherwhowasonfootflunghimselftothegroundtoavoidbeingknockedover,andariderlesshorsefellinamongthehussars.NearlyalltheFrenchdragoonsweregallopingback.Rostóv,pickingoutoneonagrayhorse,dashedafterhim.Onthewayhecameuponabush,hisgallanthorseclearedit,andalmostbeforehehadrightedhimselfinhissaddlehesawthathewouldimmediatelyovertaketheenemyhehadselected.ThatFrenchman,byhisuniformanofficer,wasgoingatagallop,crouchingonhisgrayhorseandurgingitonwithhissaber.InanothermomentRostóv’shorsedasheditsbreastagainstthehindquartersoftheofficer’shorse,almostknockingitover,andatthesameinstantRostóv,withoutknowingwhy,raisedhissaberandstrucktheFrenchmanwithit.

           Theinstanthehaddonethis,allRostóv’sanimationvanished.
