AsforCaptainSpeedy,hecontinuedtohowlandgrowlinhiscabin;andPassepartout,whosedutyitwastocarryhimhismeals,courageousashewas,tookthegreatestprecautions.Mr.Foggdidnotseemeventoknowthattherewasacaptainonboard.
Onthe13ththeypassedtheedgeoftheBanksofNewfoundland,adangerouslocality;duringthewinter,especially,therearefrequentfogsandheavygalesofwind.Eversincetheeveningbeforethebarometer,suddenlyfalling,hadindicatedanapproachingchangeintheatmosphere;andduringthenightthetemperaturevaried,thecoldbecamesharper,andthewindveeredtothesouth-east.
Thiswasamisfortune.Mr.Fogg,inordernottodeviatefromhiscourse,furledhissailsandincreasedtheforceofthesteam;butthevessel’sspeedslackened,owingtothestateofthesea,thelongwavesofwhichbrokeagainstthestern.Shepitchedviolently,andthisretardedherprogress.Thebreezelittlebylittleswelledintoatempest,anditwastobefearedthattheHenriettamightnotbeabletomaintainherselfuprightonthewaves.
Passepartout’svisagedarkenedwiththeskies,andfortwodaysthepoorfellowexperiencedconstantfright.ButPhileasFoggwasaboldmariner,andknewhowtomaintainheadwayagainstthesea;andhekeptonhiscourse,withoutevendecreasinghissteam.TheHenrietta,whenshecouldnotriseuponthewaves,crossedthem,swampingherdeck,butpassingsafely.Sometiniesthescrewroseoutofthewater,beatingitsprotrudingend,whenamountainofwaterraisedthesternabovethewaves;butthecraftalwayskeptstraightahead.
Thewind,however,didnotgrowasboisterousasmighthavebeenfeared;itwasnotoneofthosetempestswhichburst,andrushonwithaspeedofninetymilesanhour.Itcontinuedfresh,but,unhappily,itremainedobstinatelyinthesouth-east,renderingthesailsuseless.
