           FortKearneystation,wheretherewasagarrison,wasonlytwomilesdistant;but,thatoncepassed,theSiouxwouldbemastersofthetrainbetweenFortKearneyandthestationbeyond.

           TheconductorwasfightingbesideMr.Fogg,whenhewasshotandfell.Atthesamemomenthecried,"Unlessthetrainisstoppedinfiveminutes,wearelost!"

           "Itshallbestopped,"saidPhileasFogg,preparingtorushfromthecar.

           "Stay,monsieur,"criedPassepartout;"Iwillgo."

           Mr.Fogghadnottimetostopthebravefellow,who,openingadoorunperceivedbytheIndians,succeededinslippingunderthecar;andwhilethestrugglecontinuedandtheballswhizzedacrosseachotheroverhishead,hemadeuseofhisoldacrobaticexperience,andwithamazingagilityworkedhiswayunderthecars,holdingontothechains,aidinghimselfbythebrakesandedgesofthesashes,creepingfromonecartoanotherwithmarvellousskill,andthusgainingtheforwardendofthetrain.

           There,suspendedbyonehandbetweenthebaggage-carandthetender,withtheotherheloosenedthesafetychains;but,owingtothetraction,hewouldneverhavesucceededinunscrewingtheyoking-bar,hadnotaviolentconcussionjoltedthisbarout.Thetrain,nowdetachedfromtheengine,remainedalittlebehind,whilstthelocomotiverushedforwardwithincreasedspeed.

           Carriedonbytheforcealreadyacquired,thetrainstillmovedforseveralminutes;butthebrakeswereworkedandatlasttheystopped,lessthanahundredfeetfromKearneystation.
