Thelocomotivewhistledvigorously;theengineer,reversingthesteam,backedthetrainfornearlyamile—retiring,likeajumper,inordertotakealongerleap.Then,withanotherwhistle,hebegantomoveforward;thetrainincreaseditsspeed,andsoonitsrapiditybecamefrightful;aprolongedscreechissuedfromthelocomotive;thepistonworkedupanddowntwentystrokestothesecond.Theyperceivedthatthewholetrain,rushingonattherateofahundredmilesanhour,hardlyboreupontherailsatall.
