OnleavingOmaha,itpassesalongtheleftbankofthePlatteRiverasfarasthejunctionofitsnorthernbranch,followsitssouthernbranch,crossestheLaramieterritoryandtheWahsatchMountains,turnstheGreatSaltLake,andreachesSaltLakeCity,theMormoncapital,plungesintotheTuillaValley,acrosstheAmericanDesert,CedarandHumboldtMountains,theSierraNevada,anddescends,viaSacramento,tothePacific—itsgrade,evenontheRockyMountains,neverexceedingonehundredandtwelvefeettothemile.
Suchwastheroadtobetraversedinsevendays,whichwouldenablePhileasFogg—atleast,sohehoped—totaketheAtlanticsteameratNewYorkonthe11thforLiverpool.
Thecarwhichheoccupiedwasasortoflongomnibusoneightwheels,andwithnocompartmentsintheinterior.Itwassuppliedwithtworowsofseats,perpendiculartothedirectionofthetrainoneithersideofanaislewhichconductedtothefrontandrearplatforms.Theseplatformswerefoundthroughoutthetrain,andthepassengerswereabletopassfromoneendofthetraintotheother.Itwassuppliedwithsalooncars,balconycars,restaurants,andsmoking-cars;theatrecarsalonewerewanting,andtheywillhavethesesomeday.
