21 The Parting

           

           NowIhadlivedinthishappyplacethreeyears,butsadchangeswereabouttocomeoverus.Weheardfromtimetotimethatourmistresswasill.Thedoctorwasoftenatthehouse,andthemasterlookedgraveandanxious.Thenweheardthatshemustleaveherhomeatonce,andgotoawarmcountryfortwoorthreeyears.Thenewsfelluponthehouseholdlikethetollingofadeathbell.Everybodywassorry;butthemasterbegandirectlytomakearrangementsforbreakinguphisestablishmentandleavingEngland.Weusedtohearittalkedaboutinourstable;indeed,nothingelsewastalkedabout.

           Joewasengagedtotakecareofhimandtohelpinthehouse,soIthoughtthatMerrylegswaswelloff.Johnhadtheofferofseveralgoodplaces,buthesaidheshouldwaitalittleandlookround.
