           Afterthisitwasdecidedbymymasterandmistresstopayavisittosomefriendswholivedaboutforty-sixmilesfromourhome,andJameswastodrivethem.Thefirstdaywetraveledthirty-twomiles.Thereweresomelong,heavyhills,butJamesdrovesocarefullyandthoughtfullythatwewerenotatallharassed.Heneverforgottoputonthebrakeaswewentdownhill,nortotakeitoffattherightplace.Hekeptourfeetonthesmoothestpartoftheroad,andiftheuphillwasverylong,hesetthecarriagewheelsalittleacrosstheroad,soasnottorunback,andgaveusabreathing.Alltheselittlethingshelpahorseverymuch,particularlyifhegetskindwordsintothebargain.

           Westoppedonceortwiceontheroad,andjustasthesunwasgoingdownwereachedthetownwhereweweretospendthenight.Westoppedattheprincipalhotel,whichwasinthemarket-place;itwasaverylargeone;wedroveunderanarchwayintoalongyard,atthefurtherendofwhichwerethestablesandcoachhouses.Twohostlerscametotakeusout.Theheadhostlerwasapleasant,activelittleman,withacrookedleg,andayellowstripedwaistcoat.Ineversawamanunbuckleharnesssoquicklyashedid,andwithapatandagoodwordheledmetoalongstable,withsixoreightstallsinit,andtwoorthreehorses.TheothermanbroughtGinger;Jamesstoodbywhilewewererubbeddownandcleaned.

           Ineverwascleanedsolightlyandquicklyasbythatlittleoldman.WhenhehaddoneJamessteppedupandfeltmeover,asifhethoughtIcouldnotbethoroughlydone,buthefoundmycoatascleanandsmoothassilk.
