38 Dolly and a Real Gentleman

           

           Wintercameinearly,withagreatdealofcoldandwet.Therewassnow,orsleet,orrainalmosteverydayforweeks,changingonlyforkeendrivingwindsorsharpfrosts.Thehorsesallfeltitverymuch.Whenitisadrycoldacoupleofgoodthickrugswillkeepthewarmthinus;butwhenitissoakingraintheysoongetwetthroughandarenogood.Someofthedrivershadawaterproofcovertothrowover,whichwasafinething;butsomeofthemenweresopoorthattheycouldnotprotecteitherthemselvesortheirhorses,andmanyofthemsufferedverymuchthatwinter.Whenwehorseshadworkedhalfthedaywewenttoourdrystables,andcouldrest,whiletheyhadtositontheirboxes,sometimesstayingoutaslateasoneortwoo’clockinthemorningiftheyhadapartytowaitfor.

           Whenthestreetswereslipperywithfrostorsnowthatwastheworstofallforushorses.Onemileofsuchtraveling,withaweighttodrawandnofirmfooting,wouldtakemoreoutofusthanfouronagoodroad;everynerveandmuscleofourbodiesisonthestraintokeepourbalance;and,addedtothis,thefearoffallingismoreexhaustingthananythingelse.Iftheroadsareverybadindeedourshoesareroughed,butthatmakesusfeelnervousatfirst.

           Whentheweatherwasverybadmanyofthemenwouldgoandsitinthetaverncloseby,andgetsomeonetowatchforthem;buttheyoftenlostafareinthatway,andcouldnot,asJerrysaid,betherewithoutspendingmoney.
