           GingerandIwerenotoftheregulartallcarriagehorsebreed,wehadmoreoftheracingbloodinus.Westoodaboutfifteenandahalfhandshigh;wewerethereforejustasgoodforridingaswewerefordriving,andourmasterusedtosaythathedislikedeitherhorseormanthatcoulddobutonething;andashedidnotwanttoshowoffinLondonparks,hepreferredamoreactiveandusefulkindofhorse.Asforus,ourgreatestpleasurewaswhenweweresaddledforaridingparty;themasteronGinger,themistressonme,andtheyoungladiesonSirOliverandMerrylegs.Itwassocheerfultobetrottingandcanteringalltogetherthatitalwaysputusinhighspirits.Ihadthebestofit,forIalwayscarriedthemistress;herweightwaslittle,hervoicewassweet,andherhandwassolightonthereinthatIwasguidedalmostwithoutfeelingit.

           Oh!ifpeopleknewwhatacomforttohorsesalighthandis,andhowitkeepsagoodmouthandagoodtemper,theysurelywouldnotchuck,anddrag,andpullatthereinastheyoftendo.Ourmouthsaresotenderthatwheretheyhavenotbeenspoiledorhardenedwithbadorignoranttreatment,theyfeeltheslightestmovementofthedriver’shand,andweknowinaninstantwhatisrequiredofus.Mymouthhasneverbeenspoiled,andIbelievethatwaswhythemistresspreferredmetoGinger,althoughherpaceswerecertainlyquiteasgood.
