           AfewmorningsafterthistalkanewmancameonthestandwithSam’scab.

           “Halloo!”saidone,“what’supwithSeedySam?”

           “He’sillinbed,”saidtheman;“hewastakenlastnightintheyard,andcouldscarcelycrawlhome.Hiswifesentaboythismorningtosayhisfatherwasinahighfeverandcouldnotgetout,soI’mhereinstead.”

           Thenextmorningthesamemancameagain.

           “HowisSam?”inquiredthegovernor.

           “He’sgone,”saidtheman.

           “What,gone?Youdon’tmeantosayhe’sdead?”

           “Justsnuffedout,”saidtheother;“hediedatfouro’clockthismorning;allyesterdayhewasraving—ravingaboutSkinner,andhavingnoSundays.’IneverhadaSunday’srest,’thesewerehislastwords.”

           Noonespokeforawhile,andthenthegovernorsaid,“I’lltellyouwhat,mates,thisisawarningforus.”
