           Though,nowthatI’dchasedthememoriesdown,Ididhaveavagueimpressionofleavingthecar-thesunwasjustfallingbehindthehorizon-myarmdrapedoverAlice’sshoulderandherarmfirmaroundmywaist,draggingmealongasIstumbledthroughthewarm,dryshadows.

           Ihadnomemoryofthisroom.

           Ilookedatthedigitalclockonthenightstand.Therednumbersclaimeditwasthreeo’clock,buttheygavenoindicationifitwasnightorday.Noedgeoflightescapedthethickcurtains,buttheroomwasbrightwiththelightfromthelamps.

           Irosestifflyandstaggeredtothewindow,pullingbackthedrapes.

           Itwasdarkoutside.Threeinthemorning,then.Myroomlookedoutonadesertedsectionofthefreewayandthenewlong-termparkinggaragefortheairport.Itwasslightlycomfortingtobeabletopinpointtimeandplace.

           Ilookeddownatmyself.IwasstillwearingEsme’sclothes,andtheydidn’tfitverywellatall.Ilookedaroundtheroom,gladwhenIdiscoveredmyduffelbagontopofthelowdresser.
