IthadtakenmuchlesstimethanI’dthought-alltheterror,thedespair,theshatteringofmyheart.Theminutesweretickingbymoreslowlythanusual.Jasperstillhadn’tcomebackwhenIreturnedtoAlice.Iwasafraidtobeinthesameroomwithher,afraidthatshewouldguess...andafraidtohidefromherforthesamereason.
IwouldhavethoughtIwasfarbeyondtheabilitytobesurprised,mythoughtstorturedandunstable,butIwassurprisedwhenIsawAlicebentoverthedesk,grippingtheedgewithtwohands.
