"Wegetpermitsearlyontherez,"JacobsaidwhileIunlockedthedoorandflickedontheporchlight.
"Sureyoudo,"Charlielaughed.
"Ihavetogetaroundsomehow."IrecognizedBilly’sresonantvoiceeasily,despitetheyears.Thesoundofitmademefeelsuddenlyyounger,achild.
Iwentinside,leavingthedooropenbehindmeandturningonlightsbeforeIhungupmyjacket.ThenIstoodinthedoor,watchinganxiouslyasCharlieandJacobhelpedBillyoutofthecarandintohiswheelchair.
Ibackedoutofthewayasthethreeofthemhurriedin,shakingofftherain.
"Thisisasurprise,"Charliewassaying.
