           "Thanks,"hesaidasIplacedhisfoodonthetable.

           "Howwasyourday?"Iasked.Thewordswererushed;Iwasdyingtoescapetomyroom.

           "Good.Thefishwerebiting...howaboutyou?Didyougeteverythingdonethatyouwantedto?"

           "Notreally-itwastooniceouttostayindoors."Itookanotherbigbite.

           "Itwasaniceday,"heagreed.Whatanunderstatement,Ithoughttomyself.

           Finishedwiththelastbiteoflasagna,Iliftedmyglassandchuggedtheremainsofmymilk.

           Charliesurprisedmebybeingobservant."Inahurry?"

           "Yeah,I’mtired.I’mgoingtobedearly."

           "Youlookkindakeyedup,"henoted.Why,ohwhy,didthishavetobehisnighttopayattention?

           "DoI?"wasallIcouldmanageinresponse.Iquicklyscrubbedmydishescleaninthesink,andplacedthemupsidedownonadishtoweltodry.
