"’Night,honey,"hecalledafterme.Nodoubthewouldbelisteningcarefullyallevening,waitingformetotrytosneakout.
"Seeyouinthemorning,Dad."Seeyoucreepingintomyroomtonightatmidnighttocheckonme.
IworkedtomakemytreadsoundslowandtiredasIwalkedupthestairstomyroom.Ishutthedoorloudenoughforhimtohear,andthensprintedonmytiptoestothewindow.Ithrewitopenandleanedoutintothenight.Myeyesscannedthedarkness,theimpenetrableshadowsofthetrees.
"Edward?"Iwhispered,feelingcompletelyidiotic.

Iwhirled,onehandflyingtomythroatinsurprise.
Helay,smilinghugely,acrossmybed,hishandsbehindhishead,hisfeetdanglingofftheend,thepictureofease.

Hesatupslowly,soasnottostartlemeagain.Thenheleanedforwardandreachedoutwithhislongarmstopickmeup,grippingthetopsofmyarmslikeIwasatoddler.Hesatmeonthebedbesidehim.
"Whydon’tyousitwithme,"hesuggested,puttingacoldhandonmine."How’stheheart?"
