IshookmyheadtoindicateIhadnoidea.ButIdid,actually;Ididn’tthinkhewasgoingtocomeback,notin1932,notin"42or"52,either.InthatIwasright.PercyWetmorestayedatBriarRidgeuntilitburnedflatin1944.Seventeeninmateswerekilledinthatfire,butPercywasn’toneofthem.Stillsilentandblankineveryregard—thewordIlearnedtodescribethatstateiscatatonic—hewasledoutbyoneoftheguardslongbeforethefirereachedhiswing.Hewentontoanotherinstitution—Idon’trememberthenameandguessitdoesn’tmatter,anyway—anddiedin1965.SofarasIknow,thelasttimeheeverspokewaswhenhetolduswecouldclockhimoutatquittingtime...unlesswewantedtoexplainwhyhehadleftearly.
