Thedayhadbeenhot.IhadbeenuptherivertothebridgeheadatPlava.Itwastherethattheoffensivewastobegin.Ithadbeenimpossibletoadvanceonthefarsidetheyearbeforebecausetherewasonlyoneroadleadingdownfromthepasstothepontoonbridgeanditwasundermachine-gunandshellfirefornearlyamile.ItwasnotwideenougheithertocarryallthetransportforanoffensiveandtheAustrianscouldmakeashamblesoutofit.ButtheItalianshadcrossedandspreadoutalittlewayonthefarsidetoholdaboutamileandahalfontheAustriansideoftheriver.ItwasanastyplaceandtheAustriansshouldnothaveletthemholdit.IsupposeitwasmutualtolerancebecausetheAustriansstillkeptabridgeheadfurtherdowntheriver.TheAustriantrencheswereaboveonthehillsideonlyafewyardsfromtheItalianlines.Therehadbeenalittletownbutitwasallrubble.Therewaswhatwasleftofarailwaystationandasmashedpermanentbridgethatcouldnotberepairedandusedbecauseitwasinplainsight.
Iwentalongthenarrowroaddowntowardtheriver,leftthecaratthedressingstationunderthehill,crossedthepontoonbridge,whichwasprotectedbyashoulderofthemountain,andwentthroughthetrenchesinthesmashed-downtownandalongtheedgeoftheslope.Everybodywasinthedugouts.Therewereracksofrocketsstandingtobetouchedofftocallforhelpfromtheartilleryortosignalwithifthetelephonewireswerecut.Itwasquiet,hotanddirty.IlookedacrossthewireattheAustrianlines.Nobodywasinsight.IhadadrinkwithacaptainthatIknewinoneofthedugoutsandwentbackacrossthebridge.
