           Thatnightabatflewintotheroomthroughtheopendoorthatledontothebalconyandthroughwhichwewatchedthenightovertheroofsofthetown.Itwasdarkinourroomexceptforthesmalllightofthenightoverthetownandthebatwasnotfrightenedbuthuntedintheroomasthoughhehadbeenoutside.WelayandwatchedhimandIdonotthinkhesawusbecausewelaysostill.Afterhewentoutwesawasearchlightcomeonandwatchedthebeammoveacrosstheskyandthengooffanditwasdarkagain.Abreezecameinthenightandweheardthemenoftheanti-aircraftgunonthenextrooftalking.Itwascoolandtheywereputtingontheircapes.IworriedinthenightaboutsomeonecomingupbutCatherinesaidtheywereallasleep.OnceinthenightwewenttosleepandwhenIwokeshewasnottherebutIheardhercomingalongthehallandthedooropenedandshecamebacktothebedandsaiditwasallrightshehadbeendownstairsandtheywereallasleep.ShehadbeenoutsideMissVanCampen’sdoorandheardherbreathinginhersleep.Shebroughtcrackersandweatethemanddranksomevermouth.Wewereveryhungrybutshesaidthatwouldallhavetobegottenoutofmeinthemorning.IwenttosleepagaininthemorningwhenitwaslightandwhenIwasawakeIfoundshewasgoneagain.ShecameinlookingfreshandlovelyandsatonthebedandthesunrosewhileIhadthethermometerinmymouthandwesmelledthedewontheroofsandthenthecoffeeofthemenatthegunonthenextroof.
