           Thesummerwentthatway.Idonotremembermuchaboutthedays,exceptthattheywerehotandthatthereweremanyvictoriesinthepapers.IwasveryhealthyandmylegshealedquicklysothatitwasnotverylongafterIwasfirstoncrutchesbeforeIwasthroughwiththemandwalkingwithacane.ThenIstartedtreatmentsattheOspedaleMaggioreforbendingtheknees,mechanicaltreatments,bakinginaboxofmirrorswithvioletrays,massage,andbaths.Iwentoverthereafternoonsandafterwardstoppedatthecaféandhadadrinkandreadthepapers.Ididnotroamaroundthetown;butwantedtogethometothehospitalfromthecafé.AllIwantedwastoseeCatherine.TherestofthetimeIwasgladtokill.MostlyIsleptinthemornings,andintheafternoons,sometimes,Iwenttotheraces,andlatetothemechanotherapytreatments.SometimesIstoppedinattheAnglo-AmericanClubandsatinadeepleather-cushionedchairinfrontofthewindowandreadthemagazines.TheywouldnotletusgoouttogetherwhenIwasoffcrutchesbecauseitwasunseemlyforanursetobeseenunchaperonedwithapatientwhodidnotlookasthoughheneededattendance,sowewerenottogethermuchintheafternoons.AlthoughsometimeswecouldgoouttodinnerifFergusonwentalong.MissVanCampenhadacceptedthestatusthatweweregreatfriendsbecauseshegotagreatamountofworkoutofCatherine.ShethoughtCatherinecamefromverygoodpeopleandthatprejudicedherinherfavorfinally.
