           Therewerestreetcartracksandbeyondthemwasthecathedral.Itwaswhiteandwetinthemist.Wecrossedthetramtracks.Onourleftweretheshops,theirwindowslighted,andtheentrancetothegalleria.Therewasafoginthesquareandwhenwecameclosetothefrontofthecathedralitwasverybigandthestonewaswet.

           "Wouldyouliketogoin?"

           "No,"Catherinesaid.Wewalkedalong.Therewasasoldierstandingwithhisgirlintheshadowofoneofthestonebuttressesaheadofusandwepassedthem.Theywerestandingtightupagainstthestoneandhehadputhiscapearoundher.

           "They’relikeus,"Isaid.

           "Nobodyislikeus,"Catherinesaid.Shedidnotmeanithappily.

           "Iwishtheyhadsomeplacetogo."

           "Itmightn’tdothemanygood."

           "Idon’tknow.Everybodyoughttohavesomeplacetogo."

           "Theyhavethecathedral,"Catherinesaid.Wewerepastitnow.Wecrossedthefarendofthesquareandlookedbackatthecathedral.Itwasfineinthemist.Wewerestandinginfrontoftheleathergoodsshop.Therewereridingboots,arucksackandskibootsinthewindow.Eacharticlewassetapartasanexhibit;therucksackinthecentre,theridingbootsononesideandtheskibootsontheother.Theleatherwasdarkandoiledsmoothasausedsaddle.Theelectriclightmadehighlightsonthedulloiledleather.

           "Intwomonthstherewillbeski-ingatMürren,"Catherinesaid.
