           Ileftthemworking,thecarlookingdisgracedandemptywiththeengineopenandpartsspreadontheworkbench,andwentinundertheshedandlookedateachofthecars.Theyweremoderatelyclean,afewfreshlywashed,theothersdusty.Ilookedatthetirescarefully,lookingforcutsorstonebruises.Everythingseemedingoodcondition.ItevidentlymadenodifferencewhetherIwastheretolookafterthingsornot.Ihadimaginedthattheconditionofthecars,whetherornotthingswereobtainable,thesmoothfunctioningofthebusinessofremovingwoundedandsickfromthedressingstations,haulingthembackfromthemountainstotheclearingstationandthendistributingthemtothehospitalsnamedontheirpapers,dependedtoaconsiderableextentonmyself.EvidentlyitdidnotmatterwhetherIwasthereornot.
