           Thenoiseofthisdiscoverywasverygreat,notinFrancealone,butinEnglandandinGermany.SeveralsavantsoftheFrenchInstitute,andamongstthemMM.Milne-EdwardsanddeQuatrefages,sawatoncetheimportanceofthisdiscovery,provedtodemonstrationthegenuinenessoftheboneinquestion,andbecamethemostardentdefendantsinwhattheEnglishcalledthis‘trialofajawbone.TothegeologistsoftheUnitedKingdom,whobelievedinthecertaintyofthefactMessrs.Falconer,Busk,Carpenter,andothersscientificGermansweresoonjoined,andamongstthemtheforwardest,themostfiery,andthemostenthusiastic,wasmyuncleLiedenbrock.

           Thereforethegenuinenessofafossilhumanrelicofthequaternaryperiodseemedtobeincontestablyprovedandadmitted.

           ItistruethatthistheorymetwithamostobstinateopponentinM.EliedeBeaumont.ThishighauthoritymaintainedthatthesoilofMoulinQuignonwasnotdiluvialatall,butwasofmuchmorerecentformation;
