           Butadelugeofrainwasstillfalling,thoughwiththatviolencewhichgenerallydenotesthenearcessationofastorm.Afewoverhangingrocksaffordedussomeshelterfromthestorm.Hanspreparedsomefood,whichIcouldnottouch;andeachofus,exhaustedwiththreesleeplessnights,fellintoabrokenandpainfulsleep.

           Thenextdaytheweatherwassplendid.Theskyandtheseahadsunkintosuddenrepose.Everytraceoftheawfulstormhaddisappeared.TheexhilaratingvoiceoftheProfessorfelluponmyearsasIawoke;hewasominouslycheerful.

           "Well,myboy,"hecried,"haveyousleptwell?"

           WouldnotanyonehavethoughtthatwewerestillinourcheerfullittlehouseontheKönigstrasseandthatIwasonlyjustcomingdowntobreakfast,andthatIwastobemarriedtoGräubenthatday?
