Asthemonthsprogressed,thestoryofLieutenantOnodamorphedintosomethingofanurbanlegendinJapan—thewarherowhosoundedtooinsanetoactuallyexist.Manyromanticizedhim.Otherscriticizedhim.Othersthoughthewasthestuffoffairytale,inventedbythosewhostillwantedtobelieveinaJapanthathaddisappearedlongago.
