           In1972,thenewsofKozuka’sdeathreachedJapanandcausedastir.TheJapanesepeoplethoughtthelastofthesoldiersfromthewarhadcomehomeyearsearlier.TheJapanesemediabegantowonder:ifKozukahadstillbeenonLubanguntil1972,thenperhapsOnodahimself,thelastknownJapaneseholdoutfromWorldWarII,mightstillbealiveaswell.Thatyear,boththeJapaneseandPhilippinegovernmentssentsearchpartiestolookfortheenigmaticsecondlieutenant,nowpartmyth,parthero,andpartghost.

           Theyfoundnothing.

           Asthemonthsprogressed,thestoryofLieutenantOnodamorphedintosomethingofanurbanlegendinJapan—thewarherowhosoundedtooinsanetoactuallyexist.Manyromanticizedhim.Otherscriticizedhim.Othersthoughthewasthestuffoffairytale,inventedbythosewhostillwantedtobelieveinaJapanthathaddisappearedlongago.
