In1972,Suzukineededanotheradventure.HehadreturnedtoJapanafterhistravelsandfoundthestrictculturalnormsandsocialhierarchytobestifling.Hehatedschool.Hecouldn’tholddownajob.Hewantedtobebackontheroad,backonhisownagain.
ForSuzuki,thelegendofHirooOnodacameastheanswertohisproblems.Itwasanewandworthyadventureforhimtopursue.SuzukibelievedthathewouldbetheonewhowouldfindOnoda.Sure,searchpartiesconductedbytheJapanese,Philippine,andAmericangovernmentshadnotbeenabletofindOnoda;localpoliceforceshadbeenscavengingthejungleforalmostthirtyyearswithnoluck;thousandsofleafletshadmetwithnoresponse—butfuckit,thisdeadbeat,college-dropouthippiewasgoingtobetheonetofindhim.
Unarmedanduntrainedforanysortofreconnaissanceortacticalwarfare,SuzukitraveledtoLubangandbeganwanderingaroundthejungleallbyhimself.Hisstrategy:screamOnoda’snamereallyloudlyandtellhimthattheemperorwasworriedabouthim.
