           Fiveyearswentby.Theleafletshadstopped,andmostoftheAmericanforceshadlongsincegonehome.ThelocalpopulationonLubangattemptedtoreturntotheirnormallivesoffarmingandfishing.YettherewereHirooOnodaandhismerrymen,stillshootingatthefarmers,burningtheircrops,stealingtheirlivestock,andmurderinglocalswhowanderedtoofarintothejungle.ThePhilippinegovernmentthentooktodrawingupnewflyersandspreadingthemoutacrossthejungle.Comeout,theysaid.Thewarisover.Youlost.

           Butthese,too,wereignored.

           In1952,theJapanesegovernmentmadeonefinalefforttodrawthelastremainingsoldiersoutofhidingthroughoutthePacific.Thistime,lettersandpicturesfromthemissingsoldiers’familieswereair-dropped,alongwithapersonalnotefromtheemperorhimself.Onceagain,Onodarefusedtobelievethattheinformationwasreal.
