BeckerthenlandedatSanFranciscoStateUniversity,whereheactuallykepthisjobformorethanayear.ButwhenstudentprotestseruptedovertheVietnamWar,theuniversitycalledintheNationalGuardandthingsgotviolent.WhenBeckersidedwiththestudentsandpubliclycondemnedtheactionsofthedean(again,hisbossbeingHitleresqueandeverything),hewas,onceagain,promptlyfired.
Beckerchangedjobsfourtimesinsixyears.Andbeforehecouldgetfiredfromthefifth,hegotcoloncancer.Theprognosiswasgrim.Hespentthenextfewyearsbedriddenandhadlittlehopeofsurviving.SoBeckerdecidedtowriteabook.Thisbookwouldbeaboutdeath.
