1.Humansareuniqueinthatwe’retheonlyanimalsthatcanconceptualizeandthinkaboutourselvesabstractly.Dogsdon’tsitaroundandworryabouttheircareer.Catsdon’tthinkabouttheirpastmistakesorwonderwhatwouldhavehappenedifthey’ddonesomethingdifferently.Monkeysdon’targueoverfuturepossibilities,justasfishdon’tsitaroundwonderingifotherfishwouldlikethemmoreiftheyhadlongerfins.
Ashumans,we’reblessedwiththeabilitytoimagineourselvesinhypotheticalsituations,tocontemplateboththepastandthefuture,toimagineotherrealitiesorsituationswherethingsmightbedifferent.Andit’sbecauseofthisuniquementalability,Beckersays,thatweall,atsomepoint,becomeawareoftheinevitabilityofourowndeath.Becausewe’reabletoconceptualizealternateversionsofreality,wearealsotheonlyanimalcapableofimaginingarealitywithoutourselvesinit.
ThisrealizationcauseswhatBeckercalls“deathterror,”adeepexistentialanxietythatunderlieseverythingwethinkordo.
