EvenahawkhastoflyhighinordertocrosstheDeadlyDesert,fromwhichpoisonousfumesareconstantlyrising.KikiArufeltsickandfaintbythetimehereachedgoodlandagain,forhecouldnotquiteescapetheeffectsofthepoisons.Butthefreshairsoonrestoredhimandhealightedinabroadtable-landwhichiscalledHiland.JustbeyonditisavalleyknownasLoland,andthesetwocountriesareruledbytheGingerbreadMan,JohnDough,withChicktheCherubashisPrimeMinister.Thehawkmerelystoppedherelongenoughtorest,andthenheflewnorthandpassedoverafinecountrycalledMerryland,whichisruledbyalovelyWaxDoll.Then,followingthecurveoftheDesert,heturnednorthandsettledonatree-topintheKingdomofNoland.
Kikiwastiredbythistime,andthesunwasnowsetting,sohedecidedtoremainheretillmorning.Fromhistree-tophecouldseeahousenearby,whichlookedverycomfortable.Amanwasmilkingacowintheyardandapleasant-facedwomancametothedoorandcalledhimtosupper.
ThatmadeKikiwonderwhatsortoffoodhawksate.Hefelthungry,butdidn’tknowwhattoeatorwheretogetit.Alsohethoughtabedwouldbemorecomfortablethanatree-topforsleeping,sohehoppedtothegroundandsaid:"IwanttobecomeKikiAruagain—Pyrzqxgl!"
Instantlyhehadresumedhisnaturalshape,andgoingtothehouse,heknockeduponthedoorandaskedforsomesupper.
"Whoareyou?"askedthemanofthehouse.
